Biophilia: Improving our health through nature.

Biophilia: Improving our health through nature.

Us humans have a deep connection with nature that is rooted in our evolutionary history. Our ancestors were hunter-gatherers who relied on the natural environment for survival. Over time, humans developed a strong bond with the natural world that still exists today. This connection is known as biophilia, which is the innate human attraction to nature and other living things.

Biophilia suggests that nature is not only aesthetically pleasing but also essential for our physical and emotional health. Numerous studies have shown that exposure to nature can have a positive impact on our well-being. For example, research has found that spending time in natural environments can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also improve cognitive function, creativity, and productivity. Nature has a calming effect on the human mind and can help us feel more relaxed and rejuvenated.

The benefits of biophilia are not limited to mental health. Nature can also have a positive impact on physical health. Exposure to natural environments can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve immune function. Nature also provides opportunities for physical activity, such as hiking, swimming, and gardening, which can improve overall health and fitness.

Our team members have experienced this - Katie went from a corporate job at a desk to home most days. Since leaving this job and joining us at Eat for You, where our focus is on improving health, she’s conducted research into healthier lifestyles. Through her learning, she’s started a veggie garden, compost and now keeps chickens and ensures she spends time outside with her feet in the grass everyday. This helps to ground her and is her type of meditation.

Biophilia is a concept that highlights the importance of our connection to nature. Humans have an innate need to be close to nature, and this connection is essential for our physical and emotional well-being. Exposure to nature has been shown to have numerous benefits, including reducing stress, improving cognitive function, and boosting overall health. Incorporating natural elements into our built environments can help improve our well-being and create more sustainable cities for the future.
